The 1950
/
60s – A legend is born.
Even at its inception in 1952 the SL-Class had the makings of a living legend: charismatic
good looks, an unforgettable presence and a powerful engine. Originally built as a
racing sports car, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class’ first competitive outing was the gruelling
1,600-kilometre Mille Miglia in Italy. The 300 SL finished an impressive second and
multiple victories soon followed. Eventually, customer demand prompted the developers
of successor models to seek more refined ways to express athletic prowess.
