Protection beyond air bags
A comprehensive array of thoroughly
tested, state-of-the-art passive safety
features offered in S-Class are designed to
work together to help reduce injury when
an accident is unavoidable.
10-WAY PROTECTION FROM 8 AIR BAGS
The S-Class offers 10 ways in which it offers
air bag protection to its occupants

• Adaptive dual-stage front air bags for
both driver and front passenger
• Four door-mounted side-impact air bags
• Full-length Head Protection Curtains,
to help protect all four outboard front
and rear occupants from head injury and
broken glass during certain side impacts
SEAT BELTS
Every S-Class occupant is provided with a
3-point seat belt.
• All outboard shoulder belts feature
Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs)
and belt force limiters.
• Front shoulder belts automatically
height-adjust as the seats are adjusted
fore–aft.
• Shoulder belts are automatically height-
adjusting for the outboard rear seats.
INTEGRATED ROLLOVER SENSOR
Every S-Class features a rollover sensor that
automatically deploys the Head Protection
Curtains and ETDs when a rollover is
detected as being imminent.

OTHER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS
• Driver’s knee bolster
A padded section in the dashboard with
a deformable aluminum backing
helps to keep driver properly positioned
in seat, and helps protect driver’s knees, in
some frontal collisions
Wedge-shaped seat squabs beneath the
seat cushions
help to prevent seat occupants from
sliding out from under their seat belts
IMPACT-CONSIDERATE SURFACES
• The dashboard shell is made of
aluminum with a padded covering.
• The dash, switches and control knobs
feature smooth, rounded edges.
Wood trim is laminated with a layer of
aluminum in critical areas to help prevent
splintering if struck.
Thickly padded floor and padded door
panels help absorb some impact energy.
HEAD RESTRAINTS
All S-Class seating positions include height-
adjustable head restraints.
• All head restraints also adjust fore–aft
for optimal support and comfort.
“Clamshell” design moves the lower
part of the head restraint nearer the
occupant’s neck, for more precisely
placed protection.
• On models with power rear seats, the
rear head restraints rise automatically
when the occupant’s seat belt is
fastened.

PRE-SAFE
PRE-SAFE
®
is an industry-first safety
system, introduced in 2002.
Standard on all S-Class models.
• PRE-SAFE can prepare certain interior
elements for the possibility of a frontal
collision or rollover before it occurs.
• PRE-SAFE uses a network of sensors
including those for ESP and Brake
Assist to monitor driving dynamics.
• PRE-SAFE can:
Detect indicators that suggest a frontal
collision or rollover is possible
Take advantage of the time before a
possible collision occurs
Help position occupants in such a
way that the seat belts and air bags can
offer increased protection
Close the sunroof if an impending
rollover is detected
